Chapter 3 Dream
Chapter 3 Dream
"Mr. Lucius," the middle-aged police officer finally revealed his purpose:
"Professor Marcus's whereabouts are still unknown. We hope you can recall the time and place of your last meeting with them."
Upon hearing this, Lucius's mind raced. He had just finished receiving all the memories and remembered the scene of their last meeting clearly. After organizing his thoughts, he said:
"It should have been June 24th, a Monday. Professor Marcus held his routine group meeting, and he asked me about the translation of the literature. At that time, I still didn't understand a few unfamiliar words, so I asked him to give me a few more days."
"He was very angry at the time. Ethan and Ava had just finished their work, and the professor loudly accused me in the group meeting of delaying the progress of the entire research group."
"So for the next three days, I stayed in the apartment and devoted myself to studying the documents he gave me."
At this point, the smiling police officer picked up the original text of the tracking message from the table, rubbed it a couple of times, and then shook his head at the middle-aged police officer.
The middle-aged police officer nodded upon seeing this and said with a smile:
"Alright, Mr. Lucius, thank you for your cooperation. With this information, we believe we can find Professor Marcus soon. We will then notify you to come to the police station."
Is that all? Was what I said particularly important? Lucius seriously suspected that these officers were just there for show.
"Not professional at all," he thought to himself, but then he thought, what's the point of risking your life for a few pounds a week for a case that's clearly extraordinary?
However, this idea raises another, deeper question.
"It's impossible for the official institutions of the Kingdom of Horn to be completely unaware of supernatural events. Since supernatural powers objectively exist in this world, the ones handling these kinds of events shouldn't be ordinary police stations."
He was calculating in his mind:
"Either I was too low-level to access it before, or the official institutions exist in a more covert way and would not easily disclose it to ordinary citizens."
With that thought in mind, Lucius quickly gathered all his thoughts; now was not the time to delve into these issues.
He nodded to the middle-aged police officer, his expression returning to that of an ordinary student:
"No problem, officer, I'll be there. Just let me know the time and place in advance."
The three officers left the room one by one. Lucius waited until they disappeared down the corridor before closing the door. Leaning against the door, he suddenly thought of a fatal problem:
My research group is dying, and even Professor Marcus has disappeared. How am I supposed to graduate normally?
Ugh!
Since things have come to this, let's go to sleep.
Lucius lay in bed, his mind filled with the scene of his conversation with the middle-aged police officer, unable to fall asleep.
He simply used his dream-entering ability on himself, and the next second, a soft snoring sound rang out, and the diary pages were turned and he wrote again:
[The Night's Watch's Secret, Proficiency +1%, Current 2%]
Boom, boom, boom...
A familiar knock sounded, and Lucius woke up from his dream. He sat up, rubbed his eyes, and was still a little groggy as sunlight streamed in from outside the ship.
Boom, boom, boom...
The knocking sounded again. Lucius hastily grabbed his coat from the back of the chair and pulled it on, calling out towards the door, "Who is it?"
"I am Felix Bennett," a voice answered from outside the door.
"Felix Bennett?" Lucius got out of bed. He was sure he didn't recognize the man, but the voice sounded familiar.
He opened the door, and standing outside was the middle-aged police officer with painted eyebrows from the previous night.
"Is there anything else you haven't asked?" Lucius asked instinctively.
Officer Felix said casually, "We caught Marcus. This morning, our informants at East York University spotted him back in the faculty and then surrounded him."
"This works?!" Lucius exclaimed in surprise, his drowsiness vanishing instantly.
He then thought, "This is a good thing!"
Marcus's arrest will at least help find out how Ethan and Ava died, what those artifacts were, and most importantly, his graduation.
He quickly pressed on, "Did Professor Marcus explain Ethan and Ava's situation, and why did he come back?"
Officer Felix did not answer, but continued in a businesslike tone:
"That's why I'm here. After Marcus was arrested, we interrogated him, and he said some things, but we can't verify the truth of those words."
He paused, looking directly at Lucius. "We need your cooperation in the investigation. Come with me to the police station. You are the only surviving member of the research team, and your testimony is crucial to confirming his statement."
"Alright." Lucius didn't hesitate; he wanted this matter resolved as quickly as possible.
Lucius turned around, took his coat from the hook inside the door, and put on a pair of leather shoes that were already worn down.
He closed the door and walked down the stairs behind Officer Felix.
Leo Harrison stood at the top of the stairs on the second floor, holding a rag and pretending to wipe the dust off the handrail.
He saw Felix and Lucius come downstairs one after the other, the rag almost falling to the ground.
He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, probably related to the fine he hadn't had time to collect last night.
But after seeing Felix's expression, he swallowed his words back and forced out a smile that looked worse than a grimace.
A four-wheeled carriage was parked outside the apartment, with flame symbols painted on the side of the carriage, the same as those on Felix's epaulets.
"Go on up." Felix gestured for Lucius to get in first, then followed behind and closed the carriage door.
The interior of the carriage is more spacious than the outside, with two rows of leather seats facing each other and even a folding low table in the middle.
The carriage started slowly, its oak wheels making a rhythmic clattering sound as they rolled over the seams of the stone pavement.
Lucius looked out the car window; Hull was waking up in the morning light.
Early-rising bakery apprentices were placing steaming black bread on wooden shelves facing the street, a woman selling milk was pushing a cart full of glass bottles along the street and calling out her wares, and several dockworkers were carrying tool bags toward the port.
As the carriage turned from Princes Avenue in front of the apartment onto Bank Street, something happened that was completely beyond Lucius's comprehension.
Through the car window, he saw a little boy wearing overalls suddenly rush out from the sidewalk.
The boy was about five or six years old, with messy brown hair and breakfast crumbs still on his face.
He wasn't looking where he was going at all; he was only focused on chasing the rolling ball. His short legs ran incredibly fast, and he rushed straight to the front of the carriage.
His mother screamed from behind, and the coachman yanked on the reins, causing the horse to neigh loudly.
"Watch out!" Lucius exclaimed, his body instinctively springing up from his seat, his hand already reaching for the door handle, ready to jump down and save the person.
The next moment, the carriage took flight.
A rainbow streaked across the sky above the boy and came to a steady stop on the street.
"this……"
