Chapter 20 Work Arrangement
Chapter 20 Work Arrangement
Not a complete sequence?
Lucius thought that, like the Feastmen, the Church was simply missing a portion of the Ascension Potion recipe.
He said optimistically:
"Captain, even if the Feast Apostles aren't complete, can't we just find a church or cult that possesses this sequence?"
"No, these two situations are completely different." Felix shook his head, dispelling Lucius's misunderstanding.
"I have said that complete sequences are a gift from the gods, but incomplete sequences are not at all like that."
He pointed out the fatal flaw of the apostles who served at the banquet:
"Incomplete sequences are artificial sequences formed by the perception and authority of the sequencer, and artificial sequences have limits. In known history, we have never recorded a name that has been promoted more than the seventh time."
Lucius understood; it wasn't a matter of missing a few ingredients, but rather that the road itself wasn't finished.
He asked curiously, "Captain, how many times can the Banquet Apostle's potion recipe be upgraded?"
"Six times." Felix's answer was crisp and clear. "That's why I recommend this sequence. Six advancements mean that the Banquet Apostle has one of the highest potential among the artificial sequences currently on record."
He paused, then gave Lucius a meaningful look:
"The vast majority of Sequencers—I'm referring to the combined statistics of those from the Church, the Cult, and the Wild Sequencers—can't even achieve four advancements in their lifetime."
As for the sixth tier, that's something you need to consider at least ten years from now.
Lucius nodded. Faced with three choices, he did not hesitate for a moment:
"Captain, I choose the Feast Apostle."
There are two main reasons why Lucius made this choice: the complete sequence is part of the divine authority, and as a transmigrator, he was unwilling to accept any divine grace or trials.
More importantly, the occult diary clearly records a function: using occult points can fill in the gaps in knowledge.
Is a sequential approach also possible?
Moreover, after he became aware of his own nature, he was able to proactively and systematically acquire mystical points.
Seeing that Lucius made a decision so quickly, Felix's drawn eyebrows squeezed out a short, shallow vertical line between them before relaxing.
"You should understand that once you take the potion, there's no going back. You're still young, and your talent is among the highest I've ever seen in a newcomer. You still have time to think it over."
Lucius smiled and said:
"Life isn't always about making the right choices; I just made the best choices based on my current understanding."
Felix understood Lucius's resolve, and instead of trying to dissuade him, he said:
"We have stockpiled potion ingredients and advancement recipes for the Feast Apostles, but using these items requires following certain procedures."
I must submit a report to the Anti-Suppression Bureau and the Church Headquarters, requesting access rights and explaining the reason for use and the recipient information.
At the same time, your personal file will also be transferred from your current East York University registration to the official register of our Third Squad.
The issuance process requires passing through at least two levels: the Hull City Anti-Suppression Bureau office and the church's personnel department.
"So, I need to wait a few days?" Lucius felt a sense of relief upon hearing that there was a process to follow.
He had just joined Professor Anthony's research group at the university, and a lot of translation and annotation work was waiting for him. If he had to report to the Anti-Suppression Bureau to start work immediately tomorrow, the two tasks would conflict.
"As early as next Monday, the administrative staff at headquarters won't be working over the weekend," Felix said, noticing the relaxed look on Lucius's face, and asked:
"Have you been very busy lately?"
Lucius briefly explained the change of research group.
"Anthony Thorne?" Felix's tone rose slightly as he uttered the name. "The same dean of the history department who debated with professors from five countries at the Royal Society for four days and four nights? You've found yourself an extraordinary mentor."
He shook his head, seemingly both respectful of this academic life and grateful that he didn't have to endure it.
Seeing that the two had brought up academics, and remembering Felix's earlier comment about valuing his abilities in this area, Lucius asked curiously:
"Captain, what are my responsibilities after joining the Third Squad of the Anti-Suppression Bureau?"
"Our work is usually quite easy."
Felix put his hands into his uniform pockets and switched to a tone that described his daily work:
"Every day, ordinary police stations receive all sorts of strange reports: people see glowing shadows in alleys, and residents claim their neighbor's cat can talk..."
In most cases, on-site investigations reveal that it's a false alarm, but if extraordinary factors are indeed involved, then we need to take over.
The city of Hull has four anti-suppression squads, divided into districts. Our squad, the third, is responsible for the East District, Splin Street, and the West District.
He also gave a brief introduction to the other three teams:
"The first squad is stationed in the northern district, which is centered around the Church of St. Audrey, where the headquarters churches of all the major churches in Hull are located."
The southern area, lined with factories, belongs to the second squad; it houses Hur's largest steel and cotton mills. The fourth squad is specifically responsible for the dock area.
As Lucius listened to Felix's explanation, he mentally compared it with the map of Hull and quickly discovered two obvious questions.
"Captain, isn't the area we're responsible for too large? And who's in charge of the upper district where nobles and wealthy people live?"
"Good question," Felix explained patiently.
"Regional division is not entirely based on area; sensitivity is even more important."
The other three areas are all highly sensitive areas; although they are small in size, the density of risk points and events far exceeds that of our jurisdiction.
The East and West districts we are responsible for are mainly residential areas with a dense population but a low rate of supernatural events. Although Sprin Street has a poor security situation, most crimes are just petty theft committed by ordinary people, which are not under our jurisdiction.
As for the upper city, the nobles and wealthy merchants had their own private security forces.
Legally, they were not directly under the jurisdiction of the Anti-Suppression Bureau; they only needed to submit an activity report to the Bureau's office quarterly, making them essentially a semi-independent autonomous organization.
Lucius nodded in understanding.
No wonder Felix said their daily work was easy, the incidence of supernatural events in the area was low, and ordinary public security issues were handled by the police department.
Felix then steered the conversation back to his daily work schedule:
"We need to send two officers to the Hull Police Department every day to review police dispatch reports from the past 24 hours."
He held out one hand and counted the other tasks assigned to the detective agency:
"Team members not on duty remain at the Splin Detective Agency, running what appears to be our sole proprietorship."
The main tasks include greeting guests at the front desk, handling logistics and supplies, and regularly inspecting the storage room for relics.
The items behind the eighth scarred door need to have their sealing status checked every few days to ensure that the desire activity of all relics is within a safe threshold.
These tasks may sound tedious, but they make up more than 90% of the team's daily workload.
"I thought this detective agency was just a name," Lucius laughed.
Felix said seriously, "Since we've chosen to use it to conceal our identities, we naturally won't leave any hidden dangers."
"Moreover, these small cases can bring a lot of working capital to the firm in just over a month. Sometimes, using the abilities of Sequencers to solve ordinary commissions is indeed very efficient."
"Do I do the same job?" Lucius asked, reconfirming his own job responsibilities after Felix made no mention of language translation.
"No, you don't need it yet. I mean, you don't need to be sent out on missions," Felix said with a smile.
"You should graduate first. Even if you are promoted to a Banquet Apostle, you will still need to learn a lot of basic mysticism. I will arrange for Oliver to liaise with you on this matter."
He held up two fingers: "Only after at least two official members deem you qualified for overseas assignment can we confidently entrust our backs to you."
"Bravo, goddess," Lucius exclaimed. "At least it gave me ample time to process things."
