Chapter 346 - 348: Searching for a Substitute
After seeing the female ghost off, Su Nian turned back to the camera.
"Alright, that’s all for today’s stream. I have some things to take care of, so I’ll be closing the Daoist Temple for a while. If you have an urgent matter, you can send me a private message."
With that, Su Nian ended the stream.
She had a feeling the female ghost was right. The city had been restless lately.
Su Nian decided to go check it out the next day and find the source.
...
Su Nian slept fitfully, feeling a persistent sense of unease.
That night, a dark figure flashed past her window.
It was a man, leading a little girl by the hand.
Eerie and chilling.
When Su Nian woke up, she frowned deeply. She might have a sharp tongue, but she was normally emotionally stable. Last night, however, had been strange. Her dreams were a kaleidoscope of bizarre images. She wasn’t scared, but she felt oppressed.
Su Nian decided to go for a drive to clear her head. As she passed the same intersection as before, she saw someone else standing on the roof.
The person stood in roughly the same spot as the father and daughter from before, utterly silent.
Firefighters rushed to the rescue again, but before they could even reach the roof, the person plummeted.
SPLAT!
Blood spread across the pavement, staining it red.
The surrounding pedestrians, however, only quickened their pace, hurrying away from the scene.
One of the firefighters below, who had been trying to set up an air cushion, clutched the deflated material and lowered his head in despair.
’This was the third jumper this month.’
The firefighter glanced away from the body, then walked to the side.
Paramedics rushed to the scene, their piercing sirens heralding their arrival and, soon after, their departure.
"This place is seriously cursed!"
"Hurry, let’s go! I knew that old woman. She was always around here. She never seemed like the type to jump... A ghost must have bewitched her!"
Su Nian overheard the women’s chatter and watched them hurry away, not daring to glance back.
’So it really is a high-risk area.’
Su Nian looked up at the roof again. A dark figure was standing there.
It was broad daylight, yet the sky seemed to be shrouded in a black fog, so thick that not even the sun could break through.
Only the spectral figure was clearly visible.
And in Su Nian’s eyes, that was the very ghost that had just pushed the old woman off the ledge.
It had all happened so fast that Su Nian couldn’t intervene before the woman fell.
As the dark figure slowly dissipated, Su Nian squinted and saw something unbelievable.
The old woman’s spirit was leaving with it.
’No, wait!’
’That ghost... it’s the source.’
Su Nian caught up to the two women who had been whispering earlier.
The two women glanced back at Su Nian, looking her up and down.
Su Nian’s tone was cool as her hand slipped into her purse. "I’d like to ask if anything unusual has been happening around here lately."
"We don’t know!"
The two women said in unison, their attitude decidedly unfriendly.
The one in the red jacket couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
"Why should we tell you just because you asked?"
"That’s right! I’m busy. I need to buy pork ribs to make soup for my grandson!"
The next second, Su Nian pulled a thick wad of red cash from her purse.
She casually fanned herself with the money, her tone still cool.
"Three hundred per question."
The moment Su Nian took out the cash, the women’s expressions changed, their eyes fixed on the money.
Seeing the vibrant red of the bills, they froze for a second before their entire demeanor shifted.
Their faces broke into wide, friendly smiles as they looked at Su Nian.
"Oh, my, what a pretty young lady! Ask whatever you want. I shop for groceries here every day—there’s nothing I don’t know!"
’The power of money truly is something else,’ Su Nian thought, watching the two women, whose attitudes had changed so quickly and seamlessly.
Su Nian nodded and began. "So, what’s been happening here lately?"
Hearing Su Nian’s question, the woman in the red jacket eagerly piped up.
"I know!"
She said, glancing around cautiously as if sharing a huge secret.
"Lately, three people in a row have jumped to their deaths here!"
Not to be outdone, the other woman chimed in.
"That’s right! I heard it’s because the first one who jumped, a young girl, is looking for a replacement. But she’s searched through a bunch of people and hasn’t liked any of them."
As the woman said this, she glanced nervously over her shoulder.
Then, she deftly plucked a hundred-yuan bill from the wad in Su Nian’s hand.
